Earth Day 2007
Back in 1979, hundreds of children from around the world recognized Earth Day with a colorful parade at the UN headquarters in New York City. It reminds me of my favorite cruise-ride at Disney's Magic Kingdom, "It's a Small World," and with each holding the Earth flag, the sentiment is the same. As we're finding out, our planet's resources are not inexhaustible. For some, the Earth picture taken from the Moon showed this unique and fragile entity at a distance as what Margaret Mead called, "something we must hold in our arms and care for."
NASA scientist James Lovelock articulated his Gaia Theory in the 1970s, which presented Earth as a superorganism with interactive systems. His new book, "Revenge of Gaia," foretells global crisis as these systems become altered beyond repair. Along with rising temperatures, Dr. Lovelock predicts dwindling water supplies, destruction of the ocean world, declining food production and mass migration due to all of the above. In the words of the late Kurt Vonnegut, "Human beings, past and present, have trashed the joint."
But the popularity of Al Gore's 2006 documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," shows that the debate has at least entered the mainstream. And watch for "11th Hour," a documentary by Leonardo Dicaprio with over 50 interviews with environmental leaders and scientists like Stephen Hawking, Bill McKibben and Kenya's Green Belt Movement founder and 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai. If these first few months are any indication, 2007 will be the year that the Earth's environment stayed in the headlines. And that's a sign of progress.Earth from the Moon/NASA

Happy Birthday Taurus!
The Sun is now in Taurus and Spring continues to unfold in all its busily growing splendor. Fecundity, nourishment, weeding and pruning -- phrases heard in the garden come to mind for this time of year, along with the move outdoors for natural adventures. On this the eve of Earth Day 2007, the rooted fixed-earth sign of Taurus often has a lot of instinctive wisdom to share about our place in the natural world.
As for the personal birthday horoscope for Sun in Taurus, you're off the cosmic hook for the moment, with no outer planets stirring up upsets or revolutions. A harmonious sextile with Uranus could cause wonderfully strange and enlightening people to cross your path. The doorway to your own psychic senses may swing wide a few times in a startling way, perhaps through dreams or a remarkable serendipity.
Taurus, this is a time for refining your life -- this may mean doing a few mini purges of ties and possessions no longer in line with your values. You might cringe at tossing stuff out, but you're learning that it creates space for something new to come in. Saturn moves into the earth sign Virgo in September, and this means you'll have an influential planet in your corner. After being fuzzy on the big picture for awhile, the anchored feeling you thrive on and visions of a stable future could return.taurus image (public domain)

Saturn Goes Direct
Slow-moving Saturn has gone direct (exact at 5:24 p.m. EDT), which is an astrological big deal, especially for those with Saturn or Sun in Leo or Sun in Aquarius. Saturn is like the stern teacher that tests your foundation, so you won't end up falling apart like a house of cards. For those with Saturn in Leo, who are at the tail end of the dreaded "Saturn Return," Saturn's direct and retrograde movement is like going through the spanking machine, forward, then backward, then forward yet again.
Saturn's role is to set limits, parameters and to give a shakedown to all that is not authentic or is flimsily built. As it goes direct, Saturn could expose rampant Leonine bluster, spin and delusions of grandeur for what it all is. As Lord of Karma, it holds you accountable for what you do, but also what you don't do. If you've been slacking off, the Great Disciplinarian will find out. If you've been honest and made the most of your time, the Saturn-inspired reward is the solidity of your own character.Saturn/NASA

Jupiter in Sagittarius
Jupiter will be in Sagittarius all year, before moving into Capricorn in mid-December. Jupiter is dignified in Sadge, since it rules this fire sign known for its optimism, curiosity and swiftness of movement. And as part of the fire grand trines through Spring, it could inspire ideas and innovations that seem to come from a hopeful vision of the future.
Jupiter at home in Sadge radiates a pure, amplified energy of exuberance, and could perhaps encourage some faith in this fractured, chaotic world. In the birth chart, Jupiter shows the pathway to finding a sense of personal mission or destiny. You've probably heard, "Follow your bliss...the money will follow." In the same way, Jupiter's rewards of abundance come by listening to the inner calling to live up to your own highest ideals and potential.

New Moon in Aries
Let today's new Moon in Aries (exact at 7:36 a.m. EDT) embolden you to step through fear and take action -- carpe diem. As the first sign of the Zodiac, it's the initiator, the one that creates momentum. Your heart may be fluttering and your nerves a-jumble, but if you're trying, that's all that matters.
With Mercury also in Aries, a favorable aspect to Venus in Gemini, along with the fire grand trine in place, this is an open moment of possibility. Every now and then, it seems that life shows you that things, including your own limitations, aren't as fixed as you thought. And you may not even be who you think you are. The planets are aligned to inspire the freedom to re-invent yourself, try something scary, stand up for what you believe in, etc.
Scientists marvel at pockets of space, black holes where energy seems to come out of nowhere. The new Moon creates that kind of opening -- a moment to reach into your spirit's deepest resevoir and pull that potential through to this reality. The Aries alignment of the Sun and Moon makes today a kind of astrological new year. Sometimes there are longings lingering at the outer edges of our mind's landscape. Today's new Moon encourages you to bring them into focus and start growing toward that shiny vision.Moon/NASA

Aries Men Rule
He is the ultimate man's man -- women want to be with him, men want to be him. It's of no consequence that the Sun is in Aries right now, because the male Ram always acts like he's the birthday boy. Aries is the child of the Zodiac, and in her book, He's Just Not in the Stars, Jenni Kosarin particularly warns of the slow maturation process of the March ones. "Just remember that Luke resisted the Dark side. And you can too," she writes.
But the Aries man embodies the dynamism of youth, the freshness, original spark, the creativity, the natural confidence, along with a sometimes short attention span. To top it off, he's an action figure with intelligence, and some of the most manly men of Hollywood were born under this sign -- Marlon Brando (double Aries), Alec Baldwin and Russell Crowe to name a few. By the way, when Russell was a young aussie teen rocker, his first hit was "I want to be like Marlon Brando." Other quirky Aries pioneers include Jack Black (maybe), Leonardo da Vinci, Elton John, Adrien Brody and Robert Downey Jr.
The stars are favorably aligned for Aries this year, as if they needed more rocket fuel. And even though it's usually his way or the highway, you have to respect the personal velocity at which this guy travels.photo (c) Dreamworks and Universal Studios

Lunar Land Grab
Some gaze at the glowing orb in the night sky and see mystery itself -- others see a real estate bonanza. The BBC reports that a company called Lunar Embassy has sold millions of tracts, now going for between $20-$37 U.S. dollars per acre. The UN doesn't recognize the claim as legal, and the seller admits the purchases are "novelty gifts that could increase in value."
Lunar Embassy's C.E.O. Dennis Hope of Nevada likens this land grab to the one in his ancestors' day who he says settled the "truly unowned lands" of North America. But America was far from being a no-man's land -- the pioneer attitude was simply at odds with the beliefs of the native peoples, with leaders like Chief Seattle saying, "How can you buy and sell the sky, the warmth of the land?"
Since time began the human spirit has been captivated by the changeable face of the Moon and her influence on the tides. She inspired ancient myths and legends, many of them linking her to women, childbearing, the Goddess (often paired with a solar male deity), motherhood, etc. Will the Moon become the next commercial frontier, with its inexhaustible source of the rare gas Helium-3 that could be an answer to the Earth's energy crisis? Will we create the technology to live in her atmosphere someday? Or will she resist such attempts to turn her into a commodity and retain her place in the imagination as an enigmatic, unconquerable celestial entity? Time will tell.Moon/NASA

Venus in Gemini
Venus moves into Gemini today (exact at 10:15 p.m. EDT), and is set to make favorable connections to the fire grand trines through Spring. Gemini gives flight to Venus, making the mood lighthearted and airy. Together with the stimulating freshness of so many planets moving through fire signs, it could be time to seek out new fascinations, people and challenges.
The mental pieces of a relationship puzzle may move around, and as with a kaleidoscope, form a new picture. Venus in Gemini can be freeing, since rather than be bogged down in emotional quicksand, this butterfly smiles and says, "Oh well..." and moves on to the next flower. It's a time to flirt, mingle and share ideas. What you lose in depth, you gain in variety, finding out that all the tasty little morsels add up to one colorful banquet.

Wicked Astrology and Uncensored Advice
Can one little hot pink book contain all the secrets to the mysteries of man? He's Just Not in the Stars by Jenni Kosarin delves into the vagaries of each Sun sign, and together with the Venus sign, attempts to crack the guy code. There's advice for the future Mrs. Aries and the ex Ms. Aries, and the raw truth about his boyfriend potential. She rounds out her descriptions with well-chosen celebrity examples for each Sun-Venus combo, along with revealing quotes on love from each of the man-groupings.
A guy's Sun speaks of his personality, while Venus will determine his tastes and desires when it comes to love and nesting. If one is incorrigibly non-committal, the other might temper that with yearnings for hearth and home. In a comparison of charts or synastry, a telling factor is the Mars-Venus connection, and the Moon-Sun dynamics. But this book made me laugh and it's full of truths about men I wish I knew in my twenties. Looking at the Sun-Venus essence of men is a refreshing perspective and that's why I recommend this book for its entertainment value and as a handy reference.

One Easter Sunday Celebrated this Year
CNN reported crowded streets in the Holy Land today, since Western and Orthodox Christians celebrated Easter on the same Sunday -- this won't happen again until 2010. Both churches mark the holy day on their calendars for the first full moon after the vernal equinox. So why does the Orthodox church sometimes celebrate Easter as many as five weeks after Christians in the West?
Firstly, the eastern Orthodox church still uses the Julian calendar and those in the West use the standard Gregorian calendar. The main difference between the two calendars is the leap year rule. Pope Gregory XIII had revised the Julian calendar in 1582, and came up with new Easter tables for calculating the Sunday celebration. The Western church follows these ecclesiastical rules to pick Easter Sunday, which fixes the vernal equinox on March 21st, and tabulates the "ecclesiastical full Moon," which is not always the astronomical full Moon. The eastern Orthodox churches observe the actual astronomical vernal equinox and the first full Moon that follows to set their date.image (pd) Serbian Orthodox Easter service in New York.
